If you have a dog that is a picky eater or you just want to give him some variety then you might consider making him a home cooked meal. Making a dish for your dog is really very simple. A good rule to follow is the 30/30/30 rule – 30% each of carbohydrates, vegetables and meat. Ground hamburger and rice are the easiest to work with. Dogs like a variety of meats such as turkey, chicken, tuna, and venison. The best vegetables to use are carrots, peas, limited broccoli and green beans. Starches can be potatoes and rice.

Here are a few recipes to get you started:
* Easy Meatloaf
1 lb raw hamburger
1/2 cup cooked rice
1/2 cup mashed cooked carrots
Mix all ingredients together.
Place in a non-stick loaf pan.
Bake at 350 degrees about one hour or until meat thermometer reads 170 degrees.
Cool to room temperature before serving to your pet.
Leftovers can be frozen.
Bow Wow Stew
1 cup cubed chicken
4 cups unsalted chicken broth
1 small package frozen vegetables such as carrots, green beens, broccoli
(important: choose a brand that does not contain onions or garlic)
1/2 cup cubed potatoes
Water as needed
Place all ingredients in a large pot.
Add just enough water so it won’t cook down.
Simmer on low heat at least one hour.
Cool to room temperature before serving to pet.
1/2 cup apple sauce
1/2 cup mashed sweet potatoes
1/2 mashed banana
16 ounces plain yogurt
Blend all ingredients together.
Pour into ice trays or small paper cups
Place in freezer
Serve when frozen
Note: do not freeze with wooden popsicle sticks as your dog might chew on it and get splinters.
Doggy Spread for picky eaters
Is there something your dog won’t eat but should? Put this yummy spread on biscuits, dog food or whatever your pet won’t eat and chances are he will gobble it down. It’s worth a try.
4 tbsp peanut butter
3 tbsp honey
1/4 small mashed banana
1/2 cup plain or vanilla yogurt
Mix ingredients together.
Spread on dog biscuits or any treat for an extra special surprise.
