Most people think they will be able to plead their case to the Lord after they die. They erroneously think they will be judged by how good they are. Since most people presume they are mostly good they think the Lord will give them some kind of penance where they may be punished in hell for a few days, weeks, or years and then they will spend the rest of eternity in Heaven.

Most sermons I’ve heard has placed the emphasis on the fact that the younger son repents and comes home to a welcoming father. But what about the older son? He actually plays a big part in the story, too.
Why do you go to church? A lot of people go because they think they’re doing God a favor. Or maybe they think they will be favored by God for attending. Some people mistakenly think attending church makes them a Christian. Or going to church keeps them a Christian.
