Most people think they will be able to plead their case to the Lord after they die. They erroneously think they will be judged by how good they are. Since most people presume they are mostly good they think the Lord will give them some kind of penance where they may be punished in hell for a few days, weeks, or years and then they will spend the rest of eternity in Heaven.
Today I decided to pull the weeds popping up around the patio. It was a pretty easy job as the roots weren’t very deep. The problem came after all the weeds were pulled. It turns out those were sticky weeds. My hands were covered with sticky little leaves. I tried
Most sermons I’ve heard has placed the emphasis on the fact that the younger son repents and comes home to a welcoming father. But what about the older son? He actually plays a big part in the story, too.
Why do you go to church? A lot of people go because they think they’re doing God a favor. Or maybe they think they will be favored by God for attending. Some people mistakenly think attending church makes them a Christian. Or going to church keeps them a Christian.
Have you ever used any of these reasons for attending church?
When my mother was a teenager she went to a small Baptist church at the urging of her grandmother. At her Sunday School teachers insistence she attended the required salvation classes and performed the next step which was to accept Jesus as her Savior. Being obedient she was also baptized. As far as my mother was concerned she had performed the requirement to get into Heaven and that was that.
